As covered in several previous articles published in the Everlux website, Low Location Lighting (LLL) systems are essential, especially when everything goes wrong, and crew and passengers must evacuate under unfavourable conditions. The LLL system is supposed to be effective in guiding people throughout the escape route on to their Muster and Embarkation stations.

Nevertheless, most passengers are not familiar with the safety measures onboard and, even going through safety drills, may not keep in mind how to proceed in case of an emergency.

Understanding the Importance of Safety Plans

ISO 24409 –4: Ships and marine technology – Design, location and use of shipboard safety signs, fire control plan signs, safety notices and safety markings – Part 4: Escape Plan Signs used for general emergency information establishes the design principles and when followed such signage will provide a clear, step-by-step protocol for dealing with potential shipboard emergencies.

Escape Plan Signs are required to be installed on cabins and public areas.

Escape Plans installed in public areas are meant to provide a general overview of the ship’s Muster Stations and Embarkation Stations.

Escape Plans installed in cabins shall depict the primary and secondary escape routes from that specific cabin. making crucial safety procedures available to passengers.

The Role of LLL Explanatory Placards and the Synergy of Combining them

As LLL Explanatory Placards are also required to be available in the cabin, this element shall be integrated in Escape Plans complementing it with vital information on how to follow a LLL system in the event of a complete blackout or with the presence of smoke.
