World Oceans Day is celebrated on the 8th of June. Each year, the World Oceans Day aims to raise awareness on the importance of restoring and protecting our oceans.

This year's theme, "Planet Ocean: Tides Are Changing," highlights the need to restore and protect our precious marine ecosystems. It's time to create a new balance with the ocean, revitalizing it and safeguarding its resources for future generations.

Did you know that the oceans produce over 50% of the world's oxygen and store as much heat as Earth's entire atmosphere?

Here are 5 more insights about oceans:

Oceans cover an astounding 70% of our planet;
They represent 95% of the biosphere;
Oceans host 80% of the world's biodiversity;
They absorb 90% of the heat from global warming;
Approximately 30% of the CO2 released is stored in the oceans.

The oceans are vital to our planet's well-being and prosperity, and they are in danger. Through our actions, we have the power to make a lasting impact and ensure a sustainable future for our oceans. From participating in beach cleanups to supporting sustainable industrial practices, every action counts.

On this World Oceans Day,
we are thrilled to announce our endorsement
of the United Nations Global Compact and Sustainable Ocean Principles.

Everlux’s commitment to the oceans is stronger than ever. By embracing these principles, we recognize the urgent need to protect and restore the health of our oceans, which are rapidly deteriorating due to the pollution that leads to rising temperatures, acidification and resource depletion.

Everlux activity and products are focused on contributing to the prevention of sea accidents that cause so much damage to marine and coastal ecosystems. We seek to contribute to raising safety levels onboard all types of ships and in offshore activities.

UN Sustainable Ocean Principles

The UN Sustainable Ocean Principles provide a framework for responsible business practices across different sectors and geographies. By aligning with the United Nations principles, Everlux is dedicating itself to sustainable practices that ensure the health and vitality of marine ecosystems.

 Ocean Health and Productivity

Everlux assesses the impact of our activities on ocean health, incorporating this knowledge into our strategies and policies. We seek sustainable business opportunities that contribute to restoring, protecting, and maintaining ocean health, productivity, and the livelihoods that depend on it. We take proactive measures to prevent pollution, seeking raw materials and production methods that have less impact on ocean pollution.

Governance and Engagement

Everlux engages responsibly with regulatory bodies, actively contributing to the best practices that promote a healthy and productive ocean, by increasing the safety onboard vessels, leading to a lower probability of accidents that are associated with environmental disasters. We respect human rights, labor rights, and the rights of indigenous peoples in our ocean-related activities. Our commitment extends to exercising due diligence in our supply chains, consulting and engaging with stakeholders and communities in a transparent and inclusive manner.

Data and Transparency

Everlux is totally available to share relevant scientific data to support research efforts and mapping initiatives related to the ocean. Transparency is at the core of our practices, as we openly communicate about our ocean-related activities, impacts, and dependencies, in line with relevant reporting frameworks.

The effective infection prevention on board depends on the implementation of adequate measures and safety procedures.

It is essential that ship-owners, ship-operators and ship-managers make a comprehensive risk assessment on the COVID-19 risk for crew, shore-based personnel and passengers on their vessels and adopt the most appropriate prevention and safety measures in order to minimize the risk of contagion, while also increasing the confidence of every party involved in their operations.

Some countries and authorities are requiring that the prevention measures, safety procedures and emergency plans are developed in coordination with a competent third party and therefore an increasing number of companies are opting for the Certification in Infection Prevention (CIP) of their vessels.

According to the IMO Circular Letter No. 4204, in its 29 addendums (to date) and the ICS Guidance for Ship Operators for the Protection of the Health of Seafarers, the measures aimed at preventing infection by COVID-19 are essentially based on the safe use of spaces and equipment, the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, frequent hand sanitization, observance of respiratory etiquette and the practice of shipboard self-distancing (SSD).

Safety signage takes on a fundamental role in this context. Through safety signage it is possible to:

- Communicate respiratory etiquette rules, such as the use of masks and hand sanitizer;

- Provide information on the requirements and correct use of Personal Protective Equipment;

- Communicate rules for the use of spaces and equipment;

- Delimit spaces by establishing areas for the circulation of people as well as waiting areas;

- Define specific containers for contaminated or possibly contaminated waste (biological waste);

- Identify health screening areas, high infection risk areas, and isolation or quarantine wards and cabins.

Thus, COVID-19 risk prevention signage is a tool that should be used in the context of managing the pandemic, namely in the implementation of Certification in Infection Prevention (CIP) programs, so that the activity in the maritime area continues to take place in a safe and sustainable way and so that all operators and users feel safe and confident on board.

The 2nd Edition of the Everlux COVID-19 Risk Prevention Signage flyer is now available for download here and contains a wide range of signage solutions that will help you to implement effective infection prevention procedures onboard your vessels.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any assistance!

Everlux has developed a range of safety signage that aims to manage behaviour in the prevention and reduction of exposure to Covid-19 shipboard risk to crews, passengers, and shore-based personnel. This signage range follows the protocols established by IMO Circular Letter No.4204 and the ICS Guidance for Ship Operators for the Protection of the Health of Seafarers.

Meet the Everlux Project Maritime!

In order to simplify the work of those who are responsible for the ship’s safety signage projects, Everlux developed the Everlux Project Maritime: a software package that, by using Autocad or other file formats, allows the user to design and specify a complete maritime safety signage project from start to finish.

Everlux Project Maritime allows the user to easily insert the appropriate safety signs and systems directly into the drawings of the ship whilst also providing guidance to ensure that the correct choice of signs is made. It contains descriptive documents of the several signage ranges, assuring the product quality in the project.

The Everlux Project sign library is organized as per the Everlux Photoluminescent maritime safety signs catalogue but it includes shortcuts for the signs specified by IMO Resolutions A.760, A.654 and A.952.

Upon completion, Everlux Project Maritime then provides a comprehensive breakdown of the project details and signs specifications, including the alphanumeric code of the sign, the product code, size, type, location and quantity. It will also have a column for the unit price of each sign and the extended totals. It is consequently a valuable tool also for estimation purposes as it allows the user to generate automated BOQ’s, in Excel format.

Everlux Project Maritime is available in two different versions: version 2.5 and version 2.5i. In terms of hardware both versions can be used with 64 bit processors. The 2.5 version works on AutoCAD (post 2008 versions except AutoCAD LT) and after its installation will automatically generate a tool bar with the Everlux Project Maritime menu.

The 2.5i version is an independent application that allows the use of image files as the basis for the safety signage project.

The Everlux Maritime Project is available for free download here

On-board luminance measurement: contact us!

 According to IMO Resolution A. 752 (18), chapter 9, LLL systems should be visually examined and checked once a week and a record kept. All missing, damaged or inoperable LLL components should be replaced.

Still according to IMO Resolution A. 752 (18), all LLL systems should have their luminance tested at least once every 5 years. Readings should be taken on site and should the luminance level of a particular reading not meet the requirement of these guidelines, further readings should be taken in at least ten locations equally spaced apart within the given area. If more than 30% of the readings do not meet the guideline requirements, the entire LLL system should be replaced. If between 20% and 30% of the readings do not meet, the guideline requirements the LLL system should be checked again in 12 months or may be replaced.

Ertecna, Lda. (the manufacturer of Everlux products) has the DNV Approval of Service Suppliers and therefore is a competent entity to perform PL LLL on board luminance tests. For information please contact us!

2014 is a very special year for Everlux as we are celebrating 25 years of existence!

When considering the several available options to celebrate our 25th anniversary we wanted to make sure it will be done in a manner that shows our appreciation to all of our clients as well as to all safety specifiers and interior designers that have been placing their trust on our products and services throughout the past 25 years.

But how could we do this in the most suitable manner?

By developing and delivering, free of charge, the design of 25 selected Photoluminescent Low Location Lighting (PL LLL) system projects with Everlux Project maritime.

Everlux Project maritime is a Marine & Offshore dedicated software that includes a library with all IMO Resolutions and SOLAS conventions symbols and is the ideal support tool in the development of IMO Fire Control and Life-safety plans as well as IMO Resolution A.752 (18) compliant PL LLL projects.

If you are still not familiar with Everlux Project maritime, you can watch the demonstration video available at www.everluxmaritime.eu/en/service/everlux-project-maritime/

This software tool is also available for free download at www.everluxmaritime.eu/en/downloads/

During the course of our 25th anniversary celebrations we are aiming to complete 25 PL LLL system projects free of charge with the following schedule: 2 projects per month in April and May and 3 projects per month from June to December. The winning projects will be selected from registered applications. To register your application, just send us an e-mail to: 25Years@everluxmaritime.com.
In this e-mail please include the following information: company details, the details of the project that you wish to be considered and ideally the AutoCAD drawings of the vessel/ accommodation quarters that the PL LLL system is to be designed for.

Once completed, we will deliver the complete PL LLL system project in AutoCAD & PDF formats, a full summary report, legal framework and a complete bill of quantities. A technical package that, we are certain, will significantly add value to your work as a naval architect, interior designer/ outfitter, specifier, supplier or installer.

The announcement of the winning projects will be made by e-mail to all the candidates.

The deadline for submitting a project for consideration is the last day of each month and the winners will be announced on the following working day. Unselected projects will be automatically registered for consideration in the following month’s draft.

Once selected, the winning project will be completed within the following 30 days.

If you wish that your project is considered for this unique opportunity, register your application as soon as possible as the first 2 projects will be selected on 30th April 2014!!!
